Yulara’s Night Sky

IMG_6210

We went to Yulara and the Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park earlier this month and were really blown away. There are a number of things about this part of the Northern Territory that’s incredible, but if I’m honest with myself, the night sky easily surpasses everything else. I’ve spent a good amount of time in areas with little light, in the middle of nowhere, but have never seen a sky like we did in Yulara.

Our first night there we went to this special dinner (Sounds of Silence) and after our meal we were given a star talk. During this conversation, we were shown some of the Southern Hemisphere’s constellations which was interesting simply because we didn’t know any of them. We also saw the Milky Way, a satellite passing over us, as well as Jupiter (and 4 of it’s moons), Venus, and Neptune. During that evening, Jason realized that he really wanted a tripod so that he could try to capture some of what we were seeing. So, that’s what he did!

The next night we went out (well, I might have slept in the car) and tried to capture some of what we (Jason) were seeing. This was his first attempt and I think he did a great job! Below you’ll find some of his pictures.

These are unedited and taken about a 10 minute drive from where we were staying.

The craziest thing about this view is that apparently it’s very common in parts of Australia and New Zealand. At the dinner I mentioned, we were sitting next to a Kiwi who wasn’t phased at all by what we were seeing. Turns out you can get a similar view from where he’s from on the North Island. With this in mind, we’re hoping to try a couple other locations to get some more pictures.
